Underarm hair regulates perspiration and filters bacteria. However, if you want to remove them, there are several methods for smooth armpit waxing with optimal results. Here are all our tips!
Having underarm hair is quite normal. And for good reason, they have several roles. First of all, the hairs have a protective role, they limit skin irritation and filter bacteria and other microbes. In addition, they retain sweat and regulate perspiration to keep the body at a good temperature and prevent dehydration.
Like all hair in the human body, those in the armpits have several functions and are therefore useful. There are even several advantages to keeping them. On the other hand, if you want to depilate them, it is quite possible! However, it is often advisable to only wax them in summer when wearing sleeveless clothes, and to let them grow in winter. This rests the skin and allows the hairs to do their job.
Underarm hair removal is not always seen as a piece of cake. Pulling out hair is never fun. However, there are techniques and tips to achieve gentle hair removal. Here are all our tips for properly waxing your armpits.
Exfoliate the skin of the armpits
As with the legs or the bikini line, it is important to prepare your skin well before waxing the armpits. So, the day before, do not miss to exfoliate the skin well in order to get all the small hairs under the skin and prevent them from taking shape after waxing.
Like the bikini line, the armpits are a sensitive area. We then choose a gentle exfoliation such as the Délirium Floral Iris Patchouli de Baïja body scrub .
Do not hesitate to perform an underarm and whole body exfoliation every week to remove dead cells and find smooth and soft skin.
Which armpit hair removal method to choose?
Shaving is not really a hair removal method since it does not remove the hair bulb, it just cuts it off. This technique is however very quick, easy and painless. However, shaving the armpits can promote ingrown hairs but also the risk of irritation or cuts. Not to mention that the hairs grow back much faster and that it will be necessary to repeat the operation every two to three days to keep the armpits smooth.
We advise you to use a foam, a gel or a shaving cream to facilitate the glide of the razor on the skin. Take a razor with several blades, with a protective strip and with a flexible head so that it conforms to the shape of your armpits. Once you have finished shaving, remember to hydrate your skin well with a moisturizer or Biafine.
Unlike shaving, waxing removes the root of the hair. It will then grow back much more slowly, so you will be quiet for at least 3 to 4 weeks. However, waxing is obviously more painful than shaving.
You can choose either hot wax or cold wax. The second option is much easier! Apply the strip to the armpit and remove it against the grain. All you have to do is rinse off any wax residue with vegetable oil or a little hot water and then moisturize the skin well.
- Hair removal with an epilator
Hair removal with an epilator can seem painful and yet, more and more brands are developing devices with technologies that guarantee more softness. Indeed, more and more epilators are used cordless and in the shower, which minimizes the pain of epilation. Likewise, the heads are designed to avoid unpleasant sensations as much as possible. Many of them depilate and massage at the same time while some devices have a blast of cold air.
We recommend the Philips Satinelle Advanced BRE740 / 10 electric epilator. The latter is equipped with a special delicate areas head which allows not only to epilate the hair in the sensitive area with precision but also not to pull more skin than necessary. Hair removal is then less painful.
- Hair removal with depilatory cream
Hair removal with depilatory cream has the advantage of being completely painless. The hairs are dissolved by chemicals and come off after only a few minutes of application. However, the hairs grow back very quickly with this method which does not work on short hairs. In addition, it will not be ideal if you have rather thick hair under the armpits.
- Pulsed light hair removal
After shaving or waxing, it is possible to use pulsed light on the armpits to make them thinner or even eliminate them. This is a semi-permanent hair removal method that can be performed in an institute or at home. The flashes of light attack the root of the hair and diffuse heat which burns it. The hair falls out and its regrowth is slowed down.
To proceed with pulsed light hair removal, it is advisable to let the skin rest for 24 hours after shaving and in particular after waxing or epilator. Initially, the sessions should take place every two weeks and then approximately every four weeks.
e also recommend that you wear protective glasses during your pulsed light hair removal session. Also, don’t forget to hydrate your skin well after waxing and protect yourself from the sun. Yep, even your armpits may need shade or sunscreen!
- Laser hair removal
The laser is an almost permanent method of hair removal but this can vary depending on hormonal variations for example. This technique is especially suitable for people with fair skin and dark hair because the difference in pigments will be better detected. Thus, hair removal will work better.
The laser is not painless, the sensation resembles that of a small rubber band snapping on the skin. However, a laser session lasts two to three minutes per armpit! For total hair removal, it is recommended to perform 6 to 12 laser hair removal sessions. For the armpit area, it will take between 60 to 80 euros per session. In addition, it is recommended to perform a touch-up every year so that your armpit hair does not grow back faster.

A simple yet effective trick is to make a kind of paste by mixing a tablespoon of sugar and two tablespoons of lemon juice. Apply the mixture evenly in the direction of hair growth. Leave to act for 10 minutes then remove with a wet glove. Do this technique about twice a week and your hair will grow back less and less.
- The cornstarch and egg white mixture
Here again, we make a mixture with 1/2 tablespoon of cornstarch with an egg to which we can add a tablespoon of sugar. Apply the paste to the armpits, let it dry and remove the hair in the opposite direction. Your armpits will be very soft!
- The milk and turmeric mixture
For this mixture, we add 3 tablespoons of milk to 1/2 tablespoon of turmeric to make a smooth paste. It is applied to the armpit hair and allowed to dry for half an hour before removing the mixture with a damp glove. As you use this technique, your hair will become less and less.
